Attica | A candidate for Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination in the World Travel Awards

G. Patoulis: “We invest in the enhancement of the Attica Brand name. We work towards putting and keeping Attica in a prominent position on the global tourism map”.

Attica is a candidate for «Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination» in the acclaimed World Travel Awards, themselves a now well-established institution of international tourism. The region is both honoured and excited to be among other leading international destinations, such as Barcelona, Venice, Istanbul, Lisbon, Porto and Dubrovnik, by virtue of this nomination.

New Metropolitan Attica, in cooperation with the Attica Region, designed the content of the candidacy bid with a view to putting the Attica Region at the top of the list of «Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination» in the World Travel Awards.

This is an award showcasing the competitive advantages of a region, rendering it attractive to visitors all year round. This particular candidacy submission highlights ten such advantages in Attica, namely:

  1. An international airport which has received multiple awards for its levels of security and quality of services.
  2. Luxury hotels and tourist accommodation for every budget.
  3. The Acropolis, one of the most important World Heritage monuments.
  4. Blue Flag beaches within 15 minutes of the city centre.
  5. Regular access by sea to tens of idyllic islands through Piraeus, one of the leading European ports.
  6. Transport by modern tram along the entire coastline.
  7. Dining and entertainment services in impressive yachting marinas.
  8. Countless gastronomic options on the Attica Riviera and excellent wine tasting opportunities backed up by centuries of expertise and knowledge from the famed Attica vineyards.
  9. A unique combination of mountain and sea.
  10. High quality cultural events in the birthplace of modern civilization.

Drawing upon the experience of securing Attica’s candidacy, the Governor of the Region of Attica G. Patoulis stated the following:

“With coordinated work and strategic design we managed to place Attica on the list of candidates among leading tourism destinations in the World Travel Awards, a highly prestigious institution in the tourism industry.

Attica, the birthplace of modern western civilization, possesses a significant number of competitive advantages capable of transforming it into a contemporary metropolis, fit to host tourists from all over the world 12 months a year.

With a mid to long-term plan coupled with interventions already underway, we, the Region of Attica, invest in the enhancement of the Attica brand name and strive to make it a prominent spot on the global tourism map.

With iconic infrastructure projects and interventions showcasing and invigorating its developmental potential, as well as important ongoing investments, we are doing our utmost to facilitate a well-deserved boost to its international image and render it a metropolitan centre of genuinely world class.”

The World Travel Awards is a global institution, recognizing and commending the work of the tourism industry’s main players since 1993. Today it is one of the most renowned and respected trademarks of the tourism sector.
