Study for Positioning the Region of Attica as a Digital Nomad Hosting Hub
Implementation of Subproject 15, titled “Provision of consultancy support services for the study and specification of strategic proposals and interventions aimed at positioning the Region of Attica as a Digital Nomad Hosting Hub,” within the framework of the project “Support Studies for the Region of Attica for the Specification of Development Priorities and Special Actions during the Programming Period 2021–2027.”.
The Development Organization “New Metropolitan Attica S.A.” is implementing a study aimed at specifying strategic proposals and interventions to promote the Region of Attica as a hub for hosting digital nomads.
Digital nomads represent a rapidly growing category of professionals who work remotely by utilising modern digital technologies. They are individuals who choose to reside temporarily in different locations around the world while continuing their professional activities, combining work with living in destinations that offer advantages such as lower cost of living, favourable climate and quality lifestyle.
This trend accelerated significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic, and according to international estimates the number of digital nomads worldwide is expected to increase from approximately 64 million in 2022 to more than 1 billion by 2035.
Hosting digital nomads creates significant opportunities for the local economy, as it extends the tourist season, strengthens local entrepreneurship and enhances the promotion of destinations through social media. The Region of Attica, as well as Greece in general, has unique advantages for attracting this category of professionals, including:
- Favourable climate, with mild winters and an extended summer period.
- Rich cultural and historical heritage.
- A leading coastal city-break destination.
- Institutional and tax incentives, such as the digital nomad visa and reduced tax rates.
Within the framework of the project, the study focuses on the development of a strategic framework for positioning the Region of Attica as a Digital Nomad Hosting Hub and, consequently, on the development of the “Digital Nomads” tourism product in the region. The study is structured into three main sections:
1. Environmental Mapping and Analysis of Trends and Opportunities:
Assessment of the current situation in the Region of Attica and review of international trends related to the digital nomad phenomenon. The study also examines comparative data and key factors influencing destination selection, as well as the existing institutional and operational framework associated with remote work.
2. Strategic Direction, Challenges and Product Identity:
Development of a strategic framework and measurable objectives for the development of the digital nomad tourism product, including the creation of a specific narrative and identity for the product.
3. Development of an Integrated Implementation Plan (2025–2030):
Preparation of a comprehensive implementation plan for the 2025–2030 period for the “Digital Nomads” tourism product in the Region of Attica. This includes outlining strategic directions and proposed actions for the structured development of the product, identifying the required infrastructure and services, as well as developing an implementation roadmap and collaborative framework among the involved stakeholders.

Subproject 15, titled “Provision of consultancy support services for the study and specification of strategic proposals and interventions aimed at positioning the Region of Attica as a Digital Nomad Hosting Hub,” is implemented within the framework of the project “Support Studies for the Region of Attica for the Specification of Development Priorities and Special Actions during the Programming Period 2021–2027” (OPS Code: 6006487). The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the priority ‘strengthening the competitiveness and outward orientation of the regional economy’ of the Attica 2021–2027 Programme.
