Dimitris Fragkakis at CNN Insights – Athens 365: Athens as a Year-Round Experiential Tourism Destination
The wider Athens area ranks among the top three strongest tourism destinations in Greece.
Dimitris Fragkakis, President of “New Metropolitan Attica SA,” spoke at the CNN Insights – Athens 365 conference about the opportunities and challenges facing the wider Athens area as a tourism destination.
As Mr. Fragkakis noted, all stakeholders—from policymakers to tourism entrepreneurs—must remain alert, guarding against complacency even when tourism sector is performing well:
“The numbers clearly show that the wider Athens region is establishing itself among the top three leading tourism destinations in Greece. At the Region of Attica and New Metropolitan Attica, we have set a clear strategy aimed at maintaining this upward development trajectory in tourism, while further enriching our offering with a strong emphasis on sustainability.”
He also presented the 2025 action plan of the Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO), which includes targeted initiatives: “Central to these initiatives are the creation of a Destination Management System (DMS), the promotion of Athens’ islands, the coastal expanse of the Riviera, and the Attican Vineyard. Expanding the tourism product of Attica in both time and space—while ensuring social and environmental sustainability—is our great challenge for the coming years. Infrastructure, tourism growth and culture are advancing hand-in-hand at NMA, building the foundations for collective success.”
