Study on the National Road 91
The Development Organization undertakes the Study entitled: “Road Safety Improvement Interventions at Remaining Locations along National Highway 91, from Varkiza to Sounio”.
The project “Road Safety Improvement Interventions at Remaining Locations along National Highway 91, from Varkiza to Sounio” concerns the implementation of medium-term road safety interventions along a section of National Highway 91, with a total length of 18.6 km (from Agia Marina–Varkiza to Anavyssos–Sounio). The interventions focus primarily on the reconstruction of the road by introducing a central reservation, roundabouts and service roads.
This section of the road passes through the settlements of Agia Marina, Agios Dimitrios, Lagonisi, Saronida, Agios Nikolaos, and Anavyssos. The study, assigned to New Metropolitan Attica S.A., encompasses a wide range of sub-studies, requiring data collection and assessment, digital design, and specialized equipment for their completion.
Specifically, the study includes the following elements:
- Construction of a central reservation, to effectively prevent uncontrolled vehicle entry, exit and U-turns, as well as dangerous uncontrolled pedestrian crossing.
- Reduction of traffic lane widths, to limit vehicle speeds.
- Construction of roundabouts, at regular intervals, where feasible, to reinforce speed control and improve traffic flow.
- Construction of additional junctions, to serve built-up areas and facilitate U-turns using the internal road network.
- Development of service roads, where feasible and appropriate, and always with respect to the existing urban fabric, in order to restrict or prevent vehicle and pedestrian access to the main road and to deter vehicle stopping/parking along it.
- Facilitation of pedestrian circulation, through the inclusion of pedestrian walkways in built-up areas and the installation of pedestrian crossings at ground level where there are junctions within urban areas.
Given the high risk level evidenced by increased road accident indicators, and in light of the Region of Attica’s prioritization of infrastructure upgrade projects to enhance safety across its municipalities, the implementation of this study is deemed urgent and of the utmost priority.
