Completion of Sediment Management in Western Attica
Implementation of the Programmatic Agreement titled “Management of Sediments from the Flood of 15/11/2017 in Western Attica Located within the TITAN Quarry”.
The sediment management project in Western Attica was successfully implemented by New Metropolitan Attica S.A., through a programmatic agreement with the Region of Attica, funded by the Region’s Own Resources – Executable Projects Program.
In April 2023, the Development Organization undertook the study and execution of the project titled “Management of sediments from the flood of 15/11/2017 in Western Attica located within the TITAN quarry,” aiming at the removal of inert and other materials, proper waste management and ultimately the restoration of the site of the inactive TITAN S.A. quarry.
The conducted study included an estimation of the volume of waste to be transported in order to restore the area of the inactive quarry. The sediment transfer works began in June 2024 and were completed on January 22, 2025, with a total volume of 115,306 m³ managed, as determined by the topographic survey of the site.
In total, 147,000 tons of waste were handled through alternative management systems. The materials primarily consisted of C&DW (construction and demolition waste) mixed with plastics, glass, wood, soil, metals and other building materials.
The successful completion of the project significantly contributes to protecting and reducing negative impact on the environment, as well as preventing further pollution of the quarry area. By enhancing the site’s sustainability, the project completion constitutes an important step toward restoring the ecosystem of the wider region.
