Programmatic Agreement for the Preliminary Study of the Central Axis of the Hadrian Aqueduct
New Metropolitan Attica is implementing the study for the promotion and utilization of the largest operational sustainable infrastructure of antiquity in Europe.
Through the signing of a Programmatic Agreement between the Region of Attica and the Development Organization "New Metropolitan Attica S.A.", the organization undertakes the Preliminary Study of the central axis of the Hadrianic Aqueduct. The study focuses on the promotion and sustainable utilization of this monumental infrastructure — the largest operational sustainable project of antiquity in Europe — and will serve as a strategic tool in the formulation of the Integrated Spatial Intervention (ISI) for the Hadrianic Aqueduct, to be submitted under the ESPA 2021–2027 Programme.
As a unique example of ancient engineering still in operation today, the aqueduct highlights both the technical and environmental excellence that went into its construction and its economic and social value through the ages. The study being carried out by New Metropolitan Attica S.A. is structured around four core pillars:
- Identification of the development potential of the Hadrianic Aqueduct and mapping of functional interdependencies across the eight municipalities it traverses,
- Documentation of synergies with cultural and tourism development, the creative economy, and sustainable sectoral and local growth,
- Definition of approaches to showcase the supra-local role of the infrastructure,
- Recommendations for maximizing the dissemination of benefits across the municipalities involved.
The study will provide the necessary data to assess the current state of the infrastructure, emphasizing its timeless value and excellence, and shaping its future as a national and international focal point. The aim is to ensure broad cultural and tourism-related impact, not only for the eight municipalities it crosses but for the entire Region of Attica. This preliminary study is a strategic component in the formulation of the Integrated Territorial Intervention (ITI) for the Hadrianic Aqueduct, in coordination with EYDAP S.A. and the accompanying technical studies it is preparing.
