Strategy for Climate Resilience in Attica

Implementation of Subproject 11, “Provision of consultancy support services for the study on the specialisation of climate resilience in the Region of Attica,” under the Action “Support Studies for the Region of Attica for the Specialisation of Development Priorities and Specific Actions during the 2021–2027 Programming Period” (OPS Code: 5145430)

Climate change, the associated policies, plans and their implementation are among the core priorities of the new Attica Regional Operational Programme 2021–2027, while the need to build climate resilience in Attica has been established as a top priority for the Region of Attica. On this basis, New Metropolitan Attica S.A. has undertaken the development of a climate resilience specialisation study for the Region, which includes an analysis of the current situation and regulatory framework, the specification of needs and challenges in the field of climate resilience, and the formulation of proposals for how these should be integrated into the projects and interventions to be implemented by the Development Organization under the NSRF 2021–2027.

With the concept of resilience already partially incorporated into strategic planning documents such as the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the Regional Development Programme 2020–2025, the Region of Attica is now in a position to take the next step and move proactively toward developing a comprehensive strategic approach to climate resilience and how it can be enhanced at regional level.

More specifically, the preliminary screening of infrastructure for climate resilience includes:

  • Addressing major climate risks by identifying, assessing, designing and implementing relevant adaptation measures;
  • Evaluating the scope and need for regular monitoring and review, e.g. of critical assumptions regarding future climate change;
  • Verifying consistency with EU, national, regional and local strategies and plans for climate change adaptation.

The study, to be completed within five (5) months, is implemented under the Action “Support Studies for the Region of Attica for the Specialisation of Development Priorities and Specific Actions during the 2021–2027 Programming Period” (OPS Code: 5145430).
